Greene County welcomes Director of Water and Sewer

Greene County welcomed Greg Lunsford as the Director of Water and Sewer on Wednesday. Lunsford will oversee the development of a team to operate Greene County Water and Sewer Department as Greene transitions out of the Rapidan Service Authority.

Greene County has been a member of RSA since 1969, along with Orange and Madison Counties. "It's very exciting to have the opportunity to build this department from scratch and the opportunity to provide Greene County with safe and reliable water and sewer infrastructure," said Lunsford, 53, of Harrisonburg.

Greene County Board of Supervisors Chair Marie Durrer worked closely with the Chairs of the Orange and Madison Boards of Supervisors to come to agreement on terms for the County's withdrawal. The RSA Board of Members approved the withdrawal in May.

"We have worked for this for so long and it's finally here," Durrer said. "And it feels so good." "We're excited to have Greg Lunsford join our team. Greg is a proven manager. He is an approachable leader with a real passion for customer service," County Administrator Mark Taylor said.

Lunsford grew up in Tennessee before joining the U.S. Army for four years as part of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. He went on to Middle Tennessee State University, graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice Administration and Political Science. While there, he served another four years in the Tennessee National Guard. Prior to moving to Virginia, Lunsford worked in the Ocean Reef Public Safety Department in Key Largo, Fla., and then as an assistant community manager for Ocean Reef Most recently, he served as the Town Manager for the Town of Elkton, helping move forward a water system upgrade for the Town.

"I'm very, very excited to be here," Lunsford said.

In addition to applying for grants to fund the County's reservoir and drinking water plant projects, Taylor said next steps include hiring for the new Greene County Utilities Department and the Board of Supervisors' approval of a new water and sewer ordinance.
