The Citizen Academy was constructed based on a recommendation of the Ruckersville Area Plan to engage residents and businesses to learn more about our local government, local zoning, and leadership functions.

The Citizen Academy is a free program for residents interested in learning more about local government.  The program provides an interactive experience for participants, covering various local government functions ranging from fire and rescue, libraries, animal care, public works, and much more.

The April 11 topic covers the functions of the planning and zoning department.  Participants will be given an overview of Greene’s planning and zoning structure (is operation a better word than structure?).

Jim Frydl, Director of Planning, stated, “County Staff is extremely excited to host the Citizen Academy with the assistance of the Ruckersville Advisory Committee. The citizens have expressed great interest in learning their local county departments' scope, authority, and limitations of their local county departments to understand upcoming issues and volunteer opportunities.”

Gwen Baker, Chair of the Ruckersville Advisor Committee, stated, “The RAC would like to thank Jim Frydl and Stephanie Golon for giving us the opportunity to assist in this project. Knowledge of how our county works is a vital asset for our citizens.”

Additional course topics throughout 2024 include Economic Development, Parks and Recreation, and Education.  Sessions will be held in the Board meeting room and recorded to be viewed later—more information will come on each session's dates.
